Assam, Darjeeling and Ceylon. The combination of black teas from these growing regions - refined with a touch of bergamot oil - is one of the most popular: Earl Grey. Malty Assam and fine Darjeeling. Both come from India. But they couldn't be more different. One from large, fertile, humid and hot tea gardens near the Brahmaputra River. The second from higher gardens on the southern slopes of the Himalayas. Mountainous, cool and misty. All of India accounts for around 20 percent of the world's tea production. But: Indians also love their tea. They drink most of it themselves. Only around 20 percent is exported. The British gave them a taste for it in the 19th century. When they built large tea plantations so that they were no longer so dependent on China. The tea blend's namesake: a Brit. Charles Grey was British Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834. And the British influence goes even further. Sri Lanka, a small island nation, was also once under the British flag. As a colony of Ceylon. The tea is still called that. But coffee, not tea. That was what Sri Lanka relied on until 1869. Then a fungal disease destroyed the plantations. From then on, tea was grown. The growing regions are mainly in the central highlands. There is high-grown, medium-grown and low-grown tea. Depending on the altitude. Another variable: the two monsoon seasons. They have different effects on the growing regions. The result is many unique characteristics of the different growing regions, just like with good wine. But the three teas in our "Earl of Grey" blend also have things in common: all are traditionally hand-picked. And go together perfectly.
